The Einstein House

Truly revolutionary events took place behind the sandstone frontage on Kramgasse 49, in a small second floor apartment: this is where Albert Einstein (1879–1955), at the time an official in the Patent Office, developed his five key scientific works written in Bern around 1905, including the hypothesis of light quanta, the existence and size of atoms and the special theory of relativity. These were monumental breakthroughs in modern physics!
Einstein lived with his wife Mileva Maric and their son Hans Albert for two years in this modest apartment, which has been owned by the Albert Einstein Society since 1977. It has been restored to its original condition to enable visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the scholarly couple; contemporary furniture and objects have been installed here. The exhibition on the 3rd floor outlines Einstein’s pioneering discoveries while a 20 minute video explains his life, thought and action.
