Jegenstorf Castle
Bern's Baroque jewel
A former patrician country estate, Jegenstorf Castle is surrounded by extensive, idyllic parklands and situated just a stone's throw away from the city of Bern. The estate was created in 1720 by Albrecht Friedrich von Erlach who had the old moated castle converted into an elegant summer residence in the French Baroque style. Privately owned until 1934, the castle with its parklands have been open to the public since then. At the end of the Second World War, it served as the command post for General Guisan and, in 1954, the imperial residence for Haile Selassie, the Ethiopian state guest. Inside, a wealth of finest-quality Baroque, Rococo and Classical-period furnishings impresses. Special mention should be made of the largest exhibition of Swiss tiled stoves from the 18th century, the fine furnishings including outstanding items produced by the renowned Funk and Hopfengärtner marquetry workshops, and the most extensive collection of Bernese portraits. Events and special exhibitions to thrill and delight young and old.
